Advice from the Experts
Seeking
a tattoo or body piercing?
Choosing
the right studio to get
tattooed or pierced at is
not something to take lightly.
Because this industry deals
with blood (And therefore,
blood-borne diseases), and
often deals with making
permanent alterations to
your body, it's extremely
important to find a location
and an artist that holds
the highest standards possible.
1)
NEVER get tattooed in a
non-professional setting
(homes, hotels, "tattoo
parties", etc...) Since
tattooing outside of a shop
is illegal in Delaware,
it's impossible for the
state to inspect the artists
working conditions, or certify
that their equipment/technique
is sterile to begin with.
It's also impossible to
gain insurance that will
protect you. By trying to
save a few dollars "doing
it cheap", you could
expose yourself to potentially
deadly diseases (HEP-A ,B,
& C, MRSA, etc...) or
wander around with a terrible
piercing or tattoo that
can cost much more to fix...
IF it can be fixed.
2)
There is no such thing as
a tattoo artist who "tattoos
on the side". Professional
artists can make a very
comfortable living once
they get hired at a reputable
studio. So the only reason
they would offer discounted
work at home is because:
a)
They aren't knowledgeable,
or talented enough to
work professionally.
b)
They can't follow safety
standards, or rules at
a pro-shop.
c)
They are trying to "Figure
tattooing/piercing out"
on you! (Not someone you
want permanently altering
your body)
3)
Make sure the studio has
the following:
a)
A state permit. A city
permit. And a Body Art
license.
b)
Artists who are willing
to answer ALL of your
questions about preparation,
sterilization including
documentation proving
that their sterilizer
is working properly),
application, and aftercare.
c)
Ask if they are certified
in "Blood-borne Pathogens
and cross-contamination
prevention". They
should have a certificate!
d)
All needles and tubes
are opened in front of
you from single use packages,
and they are labeled as
"sterile".
e)
They have insurance! (This
protects both of you!)
f)
look at their portfolio
(A collection of tattoos
they have done, normally
in a binder/book). If
you are not impressed
by the work you see, RUN!
