Event Planning Advice from the Experts

Do you have an upcoming event and are feeling overwhelmed by the details of planning? Are you planning your own event but think it would be fabulous to have an "assistant" for the day? Are you in the beginning phases of event planning and looking for some solid recommendations for vendors? If you said yes to any of these questions then chances are you need an event planner!

Event planners can be very useful resources throughout the course of planning your event. They can help with everything from planning every detail of your event to simply being your "go-to" person the day of. Choosing an event planner can seem like a daunting task but there are just a few key elements to consider when making your selection.

First and foremost...call around!! The only way you can truly know if someone is "the one" is by talking to them and asking questions. Only when you've had a solid conversation with a planner can you determine if they are a good fit with you, your personality, your budget and your vision. Most planners don't charge for your initial consultation so take this time to get to know who you might be working with. It's an interview and any planner worth their salt will want to be thorough and answer all of your questions... basically they will want to nail the interview! During the interview ask questions! This is the time when you will be getting to know your potential planner and if you don't feel a connection with them then it's time to move on.

Another key element in determining which planner to work with is their pricing structure. Because event planning is an unregulated business, there is no set "standard fee". Planners structure their fees in various ways and at various price points. Get to know how they charge and determine if it's something you can make room for in your budget.

Another key element is testimonials and recommendations. Most planners will have testimonials and recommendations from clients they've worked with. Read them and read them carefully! Look for the reasons why the client is recommending them. Is it because they are an OCD type A planner who manages every minute detail or because they were super easy to work with or because they respond well in a crisis? A testimonial can reveal a lot about a planner and their style and can be a valuable resource for you in your decision making process.

No matter what type of planner you're looking for, make sure they are the right match for you. This is the person who is going to help make your event a success and it's important this is someone you feel confident in and feel comfortable with. Don't simply choose a planner because everyone else really liked them or because they are the most popular or because they had a nice advertisement in Delaware Today. Do your research and go with your gut.
