Boat Advice from the Experts

Among several common questions that are asked concerning boat tops and accessories are:

Stainless Steel versus Anodized Aluminum for larger structures? The alloys removed from steel to make steel stainless and rust free are some of the same alloys that give steel it's strength and resilience. There are stronger stainless alloys, but they tend stain and rust spot easier in the salt water environment. Aluminum is 1/3 the weight of steel. Generally anodized aluminum is the industry choice for weight, strength and dependability. Care for anodized aluminum can require additional maintenance in terms of protection. There are a number of product on the market that can be easily applied to keep anodized aluminum looking like new for years to come.

Fiberglass versus Canvas Top Coverings? In most cases, it's a matter of preference. Fiberglass has in generally has a longer life. There can be additional cost to mold non-standard top sizes or colors. Once a mold is made, it can be used over thus reducing the cost in standardized sizes. There can also be additional cost for the structures to accommodate the added weight of a fiberglass top. Also consider the boat size, often fiberglass can make smaller boats or shallow V-hull boats feel top heavy. Larger boats or boats with deeper hulls accommodate fiberglass better as they usually have a lower center of gravity. Canvas quality in recent years have made improved greatly. Canvas manufacturers generally have warranty terms specified in years. in most cases canvas will exceed the warranty coverage claim.
