Photography Advice from the Experts

Virtual Tours

Shooting Sports Events

Virtual tours are becoming more and more common all the time. You can go online and take a tour of famous tourist areas such as museums, churches and cities. You can tour homes for sale and even tour business and other facilities. The saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. In the case of virtual tours, pictures can be worth thousands of visitors.

Virtual tours go beyond the capability of standard still shots commonly used in slideshows. Virtual tours harness the power of panoramic photos. A panoramic photo is made up of a number of still shots that are stitched together with specialized software to create a 360 degree rendering. There are even systems available that will take a 360 degree picture with two, or even one single photo. The power of software makes it possible to create these virtual reality presentations and to immerse one in the scene.

Panoramic photography has a very interesting history which is the topic for another article. With the advent of the internet, panoramic photography is evolving quickly and uses for these images are being discovered and used for a variety of purposes. There is even a technology called object movies where multiple shots are taken of an object such as a museum piece or a car. Software renders these images into a movie where all sides of the object can be viewed. This is nothing more than an extended use of panoramic imaging.

It was mentioned earlier that pictures can be worth a thousand visitors. The real estate industry has embraced panoramic imaging and is reaping the marketing benefits. Online home buyers are touring homes from the convenience of their own homes at all hours of the day. These tools are being used not only as a selection tool, but also as an elimination tool. The buyer no longer has to visit dozens of homes in person to select the right home for them. They can visit homes virtually and schedule a personal visit to those homes that they select through this process.

Website owners are also discovering the benefit of panoramic imaging. Owners of websites spend a lot of time and money creating an online presence in the hope of getting visitors interested in their products and/or services. Visitors to a website decide within seconds whether the particular site is worth looking at. Catchy moving images like panoramas capture the interest of visitors and immerse them in the presentation. Images created by a
professional panoramic photographer can capture the imagination of the visitor and leave them with a lasting impression of the business and the products or services. This gives website owners who use panoramic imaging an advantage because panoramic images tell the visitor so much more about the facility than a traditional still image. And when the visitor does visit the physical location they have the feeling of having been there. Isn't that what you hope the visitor will feel?

About the Author: My name is Mike Wellik. I have been a panoramic photographer for four years, first as a Realtor® creating virtual tours for my own listings and now in addition to real estate virtual tours I'm offering panoramic photography services for website owners who are looking for that marketing advantage. The system that I use involves taking 12 images of a scene stitched together to create the 360 degree image. The services offered are very affordable whether you want a single panorama or want to give your site some pizzazz with a full-blown multimedia presentation. I have a site devoted to real estate virtual tours at www.t-svt.com and a new site focusing on panoramic imaging for website owners at www.panorapics.com. I can be contacted by email at mike [at] wellik.com. See you online...

For better composition, please remove all negative space in your images. Negative space is space in a photograph that has no value or importance, crop it out.

When shooting football or basketball always position yourself in front of the action when shooting, so you can capture the action coming at you. If you must shoot from the sidelines, please shoot from the 20 yard line as long the action is still in front of you.
